Marilyn A. Holmes

November 1, 1930 - April 18, 2015

 

Marilyn Adams Holmes, longtime Denver resident, passed away peacefully April 18, 2015.  She and her identical twin sister were born in Des Moines, Iowa, November 1, 1930 to parents Everett V. and Vivian (Jorgensen) Adams. 

 

After her mother's death in 1933, Marilyn and her twin were raised by their father and stepmother Arnolda Alger Adams.

 

She and her twin sister, Kay, known as the Adams Twins, were national synchronized swimming champions in High School.

 

Marilyn graduated with Honors in English from the University of Iowa. She started her writing career in New York City working for such publications as Films in Review, Mademoiselle and Business Week, among others. 

 

It was in New York that she met her husband, Hardin Holmes, and after a brief period, they moved to Denver where Hardin later became a partner in the Law Firm of Ireland, Pryor, Stapleton and Holmes.

 

In Denver, Marilyn continued her journalism career while raising three children.  As a journalist she was owner and Editor of the Capital News Service which covered the Colorado State House.

 

Her memberships included:  Junior League of Denver, Denver Country Club, Ascension Altar Guild, Colorado Writers’ Assn. and ASJA.

 

She was also on the Board of Directors of the international non-profit organization, The Twins Foundation, for over twenty years.

 

In 2006, she put her writing career on a back burner and began painting after losing much of her eyesight to macular degeneration (AMD).

 

She became a successful and prolific painter in spite of this handicap.

 

She was a member of the Park Hill Art Club and the Colorado Watercolor Society.

Marilyn was predeceased by son Jeffrey Holmes and daughter Vivian Holmes and her former husband. 

 

She is survived by son Whitney Holmes ( Halle) and grandchildren Bryce and Zoe of Denver, twin sister Kay Cassill of Michigan , nephews Orin and Jesse (Gloria) and niece Erica Wood (Bill) and eight grand nieces and nephews.
